The owners are husband and wife animal lovers Joe and Nancy. The
opening of their business was the culmination of a dream when they moved
to Yucaipa from Los Angeles in 2007. Their wish was to offer pet
owners an alternative to a commercial facility; a place that would
be warm and friendly; a place more like home. They wanted pet
owners to be able to safely leave their pets free of guilt at a place where
their pets could
interact with a family.
Back in Los Angeles, Nancy managed a boarding facility in the West Los Angeles area for over five years. It was a commercial facility, but pets boarding there were not warehoused, and it was much more like home than a typical commercial facility, especially for our feline friends. The mission was to provide a pleasant place to stay, and the clients were thrilled to have a cage-free environment as an alternative to cold steel cages. While Shelby's Eden is tiny by comparison, and is operated out of the home rather than a commercial building, the owners like the intimacy. They feel it enables them to become closer to both their two-legged and four-legged clientele. Pets who visit more than once quickly learn the routine, and the stability makes them feel more comfortable. Nancy has nearly twenty years of professional experience working in the animal industry, including animal shelter management, veterinary technician, and boarding facility management. Joe, who has enjoyed a lifetime of pet ownership, also brings a lot of experience into the business. Together, they relate to the needs of the animals on all levels. Presently, the couple still maintain jobs outside the home, but they manage to work opposite schedules so that one or the other can be on the property almost all of the time. Nancy has recently reduced her hours at The Yucaipa Animal Placement Society, where she manages the office, to allow time for the business to grow. Fortunately, she has been able to adjust her schedule to meet the needs of the growing business until it requires her full time attention. Joe, who works in law enforcement, continues to work full time outside the home. Your pets are family, and our goal is to provide them with an enjoyable experience.
